Q&A for EXCEL gPC

Q: Why we go for EXCEL gPC?

A: EXCEL gPC is environmental friendly system preloaded with gOS and OpenOffice.org 2.2. It takes less power as compared with conventional computer systems. The VIA 1.5GHz CPU only requires heat-sink to cool its temperature down and does not require fan at all. Hence, it consumes power of only 30% of other brands of processors but deliver fast enough performance to handle everyday’s works.

Q: What is gOS?

A: gOS is Google-focused operating system. It derives from LINUX and designed by the company called Good OS Company based in USA. It is the same OS that has been used in ASUS EeePC system and it is Windows XP compatible.

gOS is a new, friendly OS designed to just work out of the box with Google applications online. With a beautiful user interface, it provides everything you need to browse the web, e-mail, chat, play music and movies, create and edit documents using Google and other software.

Q: How is gPC comparing with EeePC while both are retailed for $499?

A: EeePC is good and convenience for its mobility. However, the spec is really too low. 900MHz Celeron CPU, 7” display, 4GB HDD and 512MB are making the machine incapable to run on Windows. While gPC users can later on migrant to Windows OS thanks to the 1GB of DDR2 DRAM and 160G HDD. EeePC is also lack of optical drive while gPC is offering a powerful Super Multi DVD burner that reads and writes on CD, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW and DVD RAM.

gPC and EeePC are both using Linus OS and Open Office, so the way of operation is very similar. If so many consumers have accepted the concept of EeePC, there is no reason why they can’t accept gPC. Dealer who are currently selling gPC will find it very easy to sell gPC because everything on gPC is more reasonable and practical for consumers.

Q: How OpenOffice.org 2.2 application software works?

A: It works almost identical to Windows Office application software on the word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and database. It is very easy to use. Users are able to create and modify all document files to work and swap with any Windows based PC without a problem.

Q: What things are included in EXCEL gPC system?

A: EXCEL gPC system is a complete set of desktop computer system including a 16” LCD widescreen monitor, stylish speaker, keyboard and optical mouse with preinstalled gOS and OpenOffice.org 2.2 application software. Unlike some other brands who only sell you the system barebones that do not include monitor, speaker, keyboard, mouse, OS and application software.

Q: How EXCEL gPC system’s performance?

A: It works a very fairly speed when browsing the net and other applications. It is as good as you work under MS Windows and MS Office environment.

Q: Which market sectors that EXCEL gPC system is good for?

A: gPC is good on both business and home markets. It is good for corporate, government and school market sectors that usually do not require any fancy applications or for gaming purpose. EXCEL gPC then on cost-performance aspect is the most economical solution to meet business requirements. It is the best solution for organisations that are concerning the environment and would like to help to reduce global warming by adopting energy-saving products.

EXCEL gPC is also very suitable as families’ second or third PC for kids and elder people. It is fast enough for web browsing, Internet shopping and doing home works. With its 16” LCD monitor, EXCEL gPC deliver vivid image for still and motion pictures while only occupies a very tiny space no matter at home or in the office.

for the money, a good solid computer. If you have used windows before, and are not OS literate, this may not be the computer for you. The hardware though is worth the money.

Product description doesn't mention that it doesn't work with the internal modem; broadband connection required. Unimpressed with gOS; fortunately many other free Linux distributions are readily available. Hardware more than sufficient. Overall, great machine at this price.

Good computer awful OS, 01/13/2008

Overall this is a good computer, fast and easy to use, would be better with Microsoft OS, but we went the cheap route and got the "google" operating system, so it is supported by google. It was a challenge to get to the point where we were able to download programs, but once we figured it out, it has been ok. I would not reccomend this computer for anything more than surfing the internet, because that seems what it is best suited to do. Save yourself the headache, and buy the one that is 100.00 more expensive that allready has microsoft OS installed, or else you might end up paying over that to get the windows installed.

I bought this computer for my mother and transferred her old operating system and files to it, and she was amazed at how well it runs and how quiet it is. She has to check the status light or move the mouse to see if it's on at all! This computer is also the absolute best value I've ever encountered in computer hardware. It doesn't come with a monitor, but for $200 this is the best value I've ever encountered in computer hardware.

It's not a high priced gaming PC, nor a processing powerhouse, but for basic computing and web-browsing, you would be challenged to find a better PC at the price. No - it does not run Vista, or other Microsoft bloatware, but if you take the time to learn Linux (like gOS), you will not have to pay for applications that do not work and crash your computer. Using Linux requires a little more brainpower at times, but once something is dialed in, it works perfectly without fail. This is a great PC for people to learn on and whom may not otherwise be able to afford a computer.

Bang for Buck off the Chart, 01/05/2008

You can not beat this little PC in the Bang for Buck department. It is NOT Microsoft Windows, don't buy it expecting it to be, personally I think its better than Windows. It is easy to U\use; if however, you have been using windows until now, you will have to learn some new ways of doing things. This is not a gaming machine, with exception of consoles you can not buy gaming machines for $199.00. If you need a good solid, quite computer for email, web-surfing, and lite games like solitaire, pinball, battle for wesnoth, tetris, etc... then this machine will serve you very nicely. Enjoy.

Not Bad, 01/05/2008

I originally purchased this for my 5 year old son so that he could use educational software on it. After reading several reviews I was under the impression that I could download a WINE software that would enable me to use some Windows applications (which would be need for the Windows educational software I have for my son). Well, for some reason the WINE would not download correctly (I tried several times). The CS for Evergreen was not very helpful. I ended up giving my 15 year old the Everex, and gave the 5 year old her computer. It worked out perfectly. Besides, all she did was surf the net and watch Utube. The only complaints she has is that the internet freezes up occassionally (she never had that problem before). Anyway, aside from that I still would recommend to a friend. Nice product for the price...

Meets all home needs this user has. gOS can be expanded to be much more involved. Playing DVD's not supported out of the box but the forums give assistance to get the OS to play CD/DVD's. Does require a lot of 'tweaking' for advanced programs but the Mail, Browser and other Google programs work well. After the monitor is bought, there are other complete units that could be better out of the box.

This is a great little linux box, although the keyboard is cheap. I can't get one of the keys to quit sticking. I don't shop a lot at Walmart, but am grateful they decided to sell this product. It is energy effecient, easy to set up, and the technical support is wonderful. Its biggest asset in my book is that it is designed to run on free software and is very affordable. The only down side I could find is that there is no owners manual or book for the gOS operating system.

Not for Computer Novices, 12/24/2007
By RussT, Philadelphia, PA

Overall Rating:

Product Attributes:
Value for price paid:
Meets Expectations:

This product is a terrific bargain at the price of about $200.00, and the hardware works fine! However, virtually no documentation is provided for the Linux-based software included, and the web site for the operating system gives you only answers to questions posted by previous users - in other words, if someone has already answered a question you've had, that's great, but there's no instructions on how the operating system works and how to do anything more than turn it on or to look at the web sites and links on the screen. I had to resort to the Ubuntu web site (which is what powers the operating system), which is more oriented to advanced users. On the other hand, I've not tried the telephone support number, so I don't know how useful that service is. If you know what you're doing, this is one of the biggest bargains for a computer on the market. If not, you will need someone to guide you to doing anything but the most rudimentary things.

While I feel this has good value for the price paid we found it frustrating to get up and running. The games are great and the price was super.

Makes Good Home Server, 12/20/2007
By geekworking

Overall Rating:

Product Attributes:
Value for price paid:
Meets Expectations:

Bought unit to use as a home file/print server. We have mostly moved to laptops in our house. Central storage and printer sharing is becoming more important.
Reasons why I picked this over a dedicated home file/print server unit:
1. Price - Dedicated network hard drives w/ print servers cost about the same and they do not include any hard drives. I will eventually have to add more drives, but the 80GB is good enough to start. Unit has both SATA and PATA so I can shop for deals either way. I am capable to build a computer myself, but the cost/time to collect all the parts would only save me a small amount.
2. Compatibility - Many dedicated boxes use proprietary backup software that will not run in all OS. I loaded Ubuntu server on the unit without a hitch. I knew that I wouldn't have any Linux compatibility issues because the pre-loaded gOS is based upon Ubuntu.
3. Flexibility - Mostly need file/print sharing, but the system can be easily adapted to run any other kind of servers that you may need now or in the future (apache, MySQL, rsync, etc).
Many people writing about home severs are going way overkill with RAID arrays, lots of memory, and powerful systems. Low power, acceptable performance, and a couple of standard drives that will run daily backups to each other is more than enough for the average family just trying to backup their photos/music and share a printer.
